THE BLACK
HILLS are the result of Nature's first
attempt at mountain building, some 2 billion
years ago, in the form of a granite uplift. As such, the
Black Hills are likely the oldest mountains
in the world, an ancient mountain
island in a vast sea of prairie. The Black Hills are
located virtually
dead center in North
America and provide one of the most geologically, climatologically,
biologically
and culturally diverse ecosystems in the northern
hemisphere. This magnificent and meaningful piece
of terrain provides a natural and logical location for
an annual pilgrimage, for Americans from all
over the world. Hill City, in turn, is located in the
Heart of the Black Hills. Is this the Heartland or what?
The second community established in the Black Hills
(1875), Hill City has a rich mining, logging,
ranching and railroading history.
